SMS gateways for Germany compared (2026)

12 min readDeutsch

Eleven SMS gateways for German businesses compared: price per SMS, monthly fee, sender name, free trial, API and EU hosting. Prices checked November 2026.

If you run a shop, a practice, a workshop or a SaaS product in Germany and want to send order confirmations, appointment reminders or verification codes by SMS, you have a crowded market to choose from: German specialists, large international API platforms and a few providers from neighbouring EU countries. This article compares eleven of them from the point of view of a small or medium-sized business and of the developer who has to connect the gateway.

List prices change. Every figure below was checked on 7 November 2026 on the provider's public price page or documentation (see the sources at the end). Where a provider does not publish a price for Germany, we say so instead of guessing. All prices exclude VAT; non-euro prices are quoted in the provider's billing currency.

What matters when you choose an SMS gateway

  • Price per SMS to Germany. German termination fees are among the highest in Europe, so the per-message price is the biggest cost driver. Compare the price per segment (160 GSM characters, 70 with special characters) and check whether carrier surcharges are added on top.
  • No monthly fee. For a few hundred messages a month, a platform fee of €19 or more can cost more than the messages themselves. Prepaid credit without expiry is the simplest model for small volumes.
  • Your company name as sender. German networks deliver alphanumeric sender IDs (up to 11 characters) without pre-registration, but not every provider offers them on every route or on trial accounts.
  • Delivery via direct carrier routes. Cheap “economy” routes may rewrite the sender, arrive late or not at all. For transactional messages, insist on direct routes and real delivery reports.
  • GDPR and EU hosting. Where do the application, the database and the delivery carriers sit, and is a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR) available without negotiation?
  • API and plugins. A REST API with webhooks is the minimum; SMPP matters only for very high volumes. Plugins for WooCommerce, Shopware, HubSpot, Make or Zapier save development time.
  • Support. In which language, through which channel and how fast?

Prices per message segment, excluding VAT, as published on 2026-11-07. “None” in the monthly-fee column means there is no platform or basic fee; some providers still charge for phone numbers, inbound numbers or add-ons.

The providers one by one

seven (formerly sms77)

A German gateway from Kiel with a flat list price of €0.075 per SMS within the EU, no basic fee and no minimum turnover. New accounts get €0.50 of start credit. The API is well documented, there are many ready-made integrations (HubSpot, Zapier, WordPress and others), and the company also offers HLR lookups, voice and RCS. A solid choice for German developers who want a local provider with pay-as-you-go pricing.

LOX24

A Berlin provider with three SMS types: Economy, Pro and Direct. Only the Direct route offers your own sender name and delivery reports; according to LOX24's support pages it costs around 6.5–7 cents to Germany, while Economy and Pro are roughly 5.5–5.8 cents. The exact price depends on the size of your last top-up (tiers from €40). Interesting for price-sensitive senders who are comfortable choosing routes themselves; the published tables are not dated, so confirm them before you plan a budget.

websms (LINK Mobility)

An Austrian brand of the LINK Mobility group with data centres in Germany and Austria. In Germany the SMS channel costs €19 per month plus €0.07 per national SMS; 50 test messages are included in a 14-day trial. The web interface is strong for campaigns and there are connectors for HubSpot, Microsoft and others. Fits companies that send regularly and want an Austrian or German contract partner with phone support.

Esendex

The German arm of the British Esendex group. Pay-as-you-go messages start at €0.07 and fall with volume; monthly bundles are available for larger senders. A free test account includes 25 messages for seven days. Esendex is known for its web platform, two-way SMS and surveys, and for support in German. A good fit for marketing and customer-service teams rather than pure API use.

sipgate

sipgate is a cloud telephone system, not a standalone SMS gateway. SMS is an add-on: 5.88 cents per SMS from the web interface or phone system and 9.9 cents per API SMS via sipgate.io, on top of the telephony plan. Messages go out from your sipgate number, so there is no alphanumeric sender name. Makes sense if you already use sipgate and need occasional notifications from the same account.

Twilio

The best-known API platform worldwide. Outbound SMS to Germany costs $0.112 per segment (list price as of October 2026) with the same rate for alphanumeric sender IDs and phone numbers; a $0.001 fee applies to failed messages, and billing is in US dollars. New accounts get $15 of trial credit, but alphanumeric sender IDs are not available on trial accounts. Twilio's strengths are the documentation, SDKs for every language and the breadth of channels (voice, WhatsApp, verification). The price per message is the highest in this comparison, and GDPR questions have to be handled through Twilio's US entity and its data region options.

Bird (formerly MessageBird)

A Dutch platform that has repositioned itself from a pure API provider to a CRM and marketing suite. SMS rates for Germany are no longer published on the public pricing page; you get them via sales or inside the account, and carrier fees are listed separately. Bird's own documentation confirms that alphanumeric sender IDs need no registration in Germany. Suitable for larger teams that want messaging, e-mail and WhatsApp in one platform and accept a sales conversation.

Vonage (formerly Nexmo)

Vonage publishes only “from” prices on its public pricing page; the per-country rate for Germany is shown after sign-up. Trial accounts receive €2 of credit and can text only verified numbers. Vonage has a mature SMS and Messages API and strong voice and video products; it is a sensible choice if you need those channels as well and are comfortable with a global vendor.

SMSAPI

A Polish provider with a prepaid model (minimum top-up €30) and an English customer portal. The price for Germany is in the country price list inside the account and was not published on the public page when we checked, so we cannot quote it here. SMSAPI offers Pro and Eco routes, two-way SMS and a long list of e-commerce plugins. Worth a look if you also send to Poland or Central Europe.

Retarus

A Munich enterprise messaging provider with its own data centres in Germany and REST, SOAP and SMPP interfaces. Prices are quoted individually; there is no public price list. Retarus targets larger companies with compliance requirements (banks, logistics, industry) and is usually oversized for a small shop, but a strong option when German data residency and SLAs matter.

TopSMS: strengths and limits

TopSMS is a Czech gateway that has operated in the Czech and Slovak market for years and opened an English and German version at topsms.eu in 2026. An SMS to Germany, Austria or any other EU country costs €0.084 per segment, there is no monthly fee, no minimum volume and the prepaid credit never expires. You top up by card in euros from €5 and get an invoice in euros for every payment. New accounts receive 10 free SMS to test with.

  • Your company name as sender (up to 11 characters) is delivered in Germany and Austria without registration.
  • REST API with JSON, bulk sending up to 500 recipients per request, scheduling, delivery status by webhook, an OpenAPI specification, a PHP library, a WooCommerce plugin and an official Make app.
  • The dashboard and the API documentation are available in English and German; the API itself uses English field names.
  • Application and database run in an EU data centre, delivery goes through EU-based carriers, and the data processing agreement applies to every account.
  • Messages the network rejects are refunded automatically.

What TopSMS does not offer: receiving SMS (two-way messaging) is not part of the service, there is no phone hotline in English or German (support is by e-mail, usually within hours on working days), euro accounts cannot pay by bank transfer, and the account itself runs on www.topsms.cz. SMPP is available on request only. If you need inbound numbers or a German contract partner, one of the providers above is the better fit.

How to decide: a short checklist

  • Estimate your monthly volume. Below roughly 300 messages a month, a monthly fee usually costs more than the price difference per SMS.
  • Multiply the price per segment by your real message length; German umlauts and ß are part of the GSM alphabet, but an emoji, a typographic quote or an en dash switches the whole message to 70 characters per segment.
  • Check whether the quoted price is the direct-route price including your sender name, or an economy route.
  • Send test messages to all three German networks (Telekom, Vodafone, O2) and look at the sender shown and the delivery time.
  • Ask for the data processing agreement and the hosting location before you integrate.
  • Test the API with your own stack: authentication, error messages, webhook payload, idempotency.
  • Check how you pay (card, invoice, prepaid) and in which currency, and whether credit expires.

Try it for free

You can test TopSMS without a credit card: create an account, confirm your mobile number and send your first 10 messages to Germany free of charge. Developers will find request examples and the OpenAPI specification in the API documentation.
